October 7th, 1997, a masterpiece was released to the public.
Not only were it’s lyrics genius and it’s rhythms powerful, but the album as a whole was, and still is, a guideline to discovering ones self.
I don’t mean to wrap this life lesson into a cliche.
What I mean is that the album teaches that the restless can only find peace by going back, understanding and accepting their past, and knowing that that is the only way to knowing and loving who you truly are.
”You see, you can’t run away from your pain. Because where ever you run, there you will be”
And she was right; there’s no way around it.
Sooner or Later, you will have to face yourself like Janet did on this album.
The songs go deep into her past, present, and reach to inform her future, which is why the album itself is special, and much more than a physical CD, vinyl, or cassette.
She literally embodied the meaning behind Sankofa, all while fabulously liberating herself from her pasts suppression with chic clothing and Autumn like hair.
Happy 15th Anniversary the Velvet Rope;
and I love you Janet. Thank you for creating such a beautiful work of art.
